About

Hello, My Name Is…

workpic

Sam.  I’m a volunteer audio engineer at my church, Cornerstone Fellowship in Livermore, California.  Up through last fall I was the staff audio manager but I’ve switch things up and have moved on to freelance web/application development.  Chris Pedro is the lead FOH guy now and I get to help out. Cornerstone has been my church home since ‘92 and I’ve seen it grow from about 200 people to around 5000 adults and children.

Though I’m not as involved now as I was when I was on staff, I’m going to keep this blog up and post occasionally.

I’ve had a pretty cool life.  Highlights include YWAM (Montana) for 4 years and playing in my old band, Dime Store Prophets, back in the day.  I’m a bass player gone sound guy.  Years of touring experience in a band, monitor engineer, and FOH engineer has left me with a long list of friends and acquaintances like Five Iron Frenzy, Sixpence, Switchfoot, Relient K, Black Eyed Sceva (Model Engine), Justin McRoberts, Lost Dogs, Bebo Norman, and Caedmon’s Call to name a few.  That was fun but settling down “where the trees stand still” (thanks Bebo) with a steady pace has great benefits too.

I am driven toward excellence to a fault but very ok with that.   Church sound has been one of the most challenging, frustrating, and rewarding things I’ve ever done.  This multifaceted job is way harder than touring audio ever was.  Finding power, rigging speakers, tuning a room, and cranking up the volume for a show was easy.  Working with volunteer band members (like me) and mixing worship (not concerts) for a growing church family has taught me a lot about life, love, and maturity.

For the geeks:  The heart of our system is an Innovason SY80 through Nexo Geo line arrays.  You can see our services online.  It’s the house board mix – very unforgiving so set your expectations accordingly.  :)

While I hope my observations, experiences, and thoughts are helpful (or at least interesting) views expressed here are entirely my own and do not necessarily reflect the views of my church.
